Death of Nurul Islam
Fair probe demanded
Noted citizens yesterday demanded proper investigation into the deaths of former president of Ganotantri Party Nurul Islam and his son Tamohar Islam.
At a memorial meeting to mark the second death anniversary of the veteran politician at Central Shaheed Minar in the city, they said the incident was not a mere outbreak of a fire but a planned murder.
They said though the government has termed the case a sensational one, police are not eager enough to investigate it properly.
Bangladesh Krishi Bank Chairman Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled said police say they can't find any clue of the incident but in fact there were clues.
Khaled said, “The very characteristic of fire causes it to burn all. But the fire at Nurul's house did not burn papers, clothes and books in the room where the fire broke out.
“Investigation can be run taking this clue into consideration.
“Nurul in his last statement at the hospital before his death told journalists that the incident was a conspiracy.”
Awami League lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta said the government is interested in a proper investigation into the incident and trial of the criminals but also has the responsibility to assist the investigation authorities with evidences and witnesses.
He also echoed with Khaled, saying that the incident was a conspiracy as Nurul mentioned in his dying statement.
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said we want quick investigation into the incident and punishment to the criminals.
Workers Party of Bangladesh President and lawmaker Rashed Khan Menon and Dhaka University Prof Syed Manjurul Islam, among others, addressed the memorial meeting.
