Speakers urge govt

Speakers at a discussion yesterday demanded a separate monitoring system to ensure safe water transportation in the country's haor region. On average 5 to 6 major river accidents occur annually in the region, which claim over a hundred lives. So the government should take necessary measures to improve the river transportation system to avert accident, they said. The demand came from a consultancy meeting at Moni Singh-Forhad Memorial Trust in the city, said a press release. Nagorik Sanghati, Surakkha, and Agragati Foundation and Bangladesh Development and Environment Forum (BDEF) jointly organised it. During the last two years, 317 people died in all in different river accidents in the haor region, said the speakers. They also placed a10-point demand including conducting regular mobile court drive, formulating separate policy for different categories of vessels, and banning of unregistered and unfit vessels. The demands further include setting up a BIWTA (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority) office in haor region, increasing the number of marine court, formation of river police, and creating awareness among the people. BDEF President Engr Sardar Amin chaired the discussion. Lawmaker of Sunamganj-3 constituency and Deputy Secretary Zafar Siddique of the environment ministry also spoke.
