Govt to launch anti-fatwa campaign
The government will take necessary steps to launch a massive campaign against fatwa (religious diktat) to prevent fatwa-related crimes, State Minister for Religious Affairs Shahjahan Miah told parliament yesterday.
In reply to lawmakers' queries, the state minister said persons responsible for issuing fatwa are facing trial in line with the existing law.
“Besides, religious affairs ministry through the Islamic Foundation will launch a massive campaign across the country against fatwa to prevent fatwa-related crimes,” Shahjahan Miah said.
During yesterday's question-answer session, Awami League lawmaker Ghyas Uddin Ahmed pointed out fatwa-related recent crimes against girls and women leading to their deaths.
He enquired the state minister about government's measures to check it.
Meanwhile,Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan yesterday in parliament said the hijacked Bangladeshi ship MV Jahan Moni and its 26 crew members will be rescued soon.
“According to the latest information, effective negotiation between the ship owner and Somali pirates are being held to rescue the ship and its crew. We can hope that they would be rescued soon,” the shipping minister said in a scripted answer.
In to another query, the shipping minister informed the House that a feasibility study is under way to construct the country's third seaport at Rabonabad Channel in Patuakhali.
Regarding improvement on movement of ocean-going ships, he said Russia has given three ocean-going ships to Bangladesh. Besides, Norway, Sweden, UK, France and Denmark have provided Tk 105.44 crore to Bangladesh as grant which will be spent for purchasing ships.
