Wreath placed in first ever Shaheed Minar in Pakistan chancery
Different government, non-government, socio-political and cultural organisations as well as business and professional bodies yesterday observed Amar Ekushey, also the International Mother Language Day, with due solemnity and befitting manner across the country.
People from all walks of life thronged Shaheed Minars (memorial to language martyrs) across the country since the wee hours of Monday to pay their respects to language martyrs.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan Suhrab Hossain hoisted Bangladesh's national flag at half-mast in the Chancery to pay homage to the language martyrs.
He placed wreath at a Shaheed Minar, temporarily erected there for the first time in Pakistan, on behalf of the officers and officials of the high commission. Expatriate Bangladeshis living in Islamabad also presented wreaths there.
Workers Party of Bangladesh and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal placed wreaths at Central Shaheed Minar, early in the morning.
Kendriyo Konchi-Kanchar Mela held a discussion and cultural programme at its auditorium in Segunbagicha in the city. Later, prizes were distributed among winners of a Bangla handwriting and spelling competition.
Jagannath University Vice Chancellor Prof Mesbahuddind Ahmed placed wreath at Central Shaheed Minar on behalf of the university.
Asia Chinnamul Manobadhikar Bastobayon Foundation held a seminar on the occasion at Central Public Library in the city.
Motijheel Peshajibi Unnayan Forum held a discussion and cultural programme at Photo Journalist Association auditorium in city's Paltan to mark the day.
Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Chittagong Samity Dhaka, Jasimuddin Institute, Amra Muktijoddhar Shontan, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Parishad, Shishu-Kishore Mela, Asad Smrity Pathagar and Progatishil Chikitshak Forum placed wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar.
They were followed by Charon Shangskritik Kendra, Progatishil Shikkhok Forum, Samajtantrik Mahila Forum and Samajtantrik Sramik Front.
