Speakers at a programme yesterday urged the government to give state recognition to the accused in Agartala Conspiracy Case for their contribution in freeing the country. “Bangladesh would not achieve independence unless the accused engaged themselves in armed revolution to liberate the country,” said Awami League (AL) leader Tofail Ahmed. He was addressing the programme organised by Muktijuddo O Shadhinatar Itihas Gobeshona Foundation at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University on the occasion of conferring the title “Bangabandhu” to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Tofail, also a member of AL Advisory Council, said Agartala Case was designed to hang the main accused in the case, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. During his regime Bangabandhu valued the contribution of each accused by promoting them to different posts, he said, adding that similarly the state should award and provide necessary help to them. Deputy Speaker of parliament, Col (retd) Shawkat Ali, said the accused in Agartala Case initiated the War of Liberation. “Now they want to live with honour.” Himself an accused in the case, Shawkat, stressed the need to form a research institute on the liberation war. All 35 accused in the Agartala Conspiracy Case were awarded with crest at the programme. And seven former leaders of Chhatra Sangram Parishad -- Tofail Ahmed, Adbur Rauf, Khaled Mohammad Ali, Mostafa Jamal Hyder, Samsuddoha, and Fakhrul Islam Munshi -- were accorded reception. Muktijuddo O Shadhinatar Itihas Gobeshona Foundation Adviser Nurul Islam Thandu chaired the event while former minister Mostafa Jamal Hyder, Shahriar Alam MP, and Abul Kalam Azad MP, and one of the accused Col (retd) Shamsul Alam also spoke.
