448 flats to be built for JS staff
The government took a Tk 168.22 crore project to build 448 flats for officers and employees of Jatiya Sangsad secretariat.
Under the project, eight 16-storied buildings will be constructed in the city's Agargaon area, close to the parliament secretariat, aimed at meeting their housing demand.
The construction work is scheduled to begin in the 2011-12 fiscal and to be completed in 2014, said a source at Public Works Department (PWD).
“For the first time after War of Liberation, the government took an initiative to solve the housing problem of the officers and employees,” PWD Chief Engineer Dewan Mohammad Yamin told the news agency yesterday.
Their housing problem will be solved if the project is implemented, he said, adding that it will soon be placed before Executive Committee of National Economic Council for approval.
They need to live close to the parliament, Yamin said.
Sources said the total number of officers and employees of parliament secretariat is 951. Only 311 employees were allotted houses as per seniority. The flats will be allotted to 448 officers and employees out of the remaining 640.
The flats have a range of sizes -- 56 flats will be 1,250 square-foot each, 112 flats to be 1,000 square-foot and 168 of 600 square-foot. All facilities including utility services will be provided under the project.
