Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan here yesterday inaugurated the project for capital dredging in the river Karnaphuli and construction of a 2.6km marine driveway with bank protection and jetty facilities. Addressing a discussion following the inauguration, the minister expressed hope that once the capital dredging project is implemented, navigability of the Karnaphuli would be improved with an increase in both its depth and width. Vessel congestion between Sadarghat and Banglabazar and in the river mouth would also be reduced significantly and waterlogging in the port city would be solved, he said. Malaysian Maritime and Dredging Corporation (MMDC) has set to implement the "Capital Dredging And Bank Protection Work" project with a scheduled period of 600 days. Under the project, around 2km bed of the river from Sadarghat jetty to some 500 metres off the 3rd Karnaphuli Bridge would be dredged. At the same time a 2.615km long marine driveway with bank protection and a 400-metre jetty would be constructed along the left bank of the river from Sadarghat to 2.6km upstream, said Project Director Khademul Basher. Chairman of parliamentary body on shipping ministry Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury; lawmakers Shamsul Islam and Mainuddin Khan Badal; and Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Commodore M Anwarul Islam, among others, attended the discussion as special guests.
