Foreign company keen on monorail
Scomi International, a joint venture company of Malaysia and India, has expressed interest to set up monorails in the capital Dhaka and in the port city of Chittagong under Public Private Partnership (PPP).
A delegation of the company made the proposal at a meeting with Finance Minister AMA Muhith at his secretariat office yesterday.
Syed Hossain, general manager development of Scomi International, led the delegation.
Muhith said, "They [the company] could put forward their proposal to the government, which will be examined by the communications ministry".
Scomi International gave a presentation about their recent monorail construction work in Mumbai, he added.
"It's in a very preliminary stage, and there was no discussion on the terms of reference".
Muhith said he had asked the delegation to come up with their proposal considering the Strategic Transport Plan of the government.
He said the delegation informed him that they would be able to construct the monorail on the airport road where some seven metres of space would be required on both sides of the existing road. There would be no need for any land acquisition.
The company is constructing a 26-km stretch of monorail in Mumbai with an estimated cost of 120 crore Indian rupees per kilometre, he added.
Muhith said the government needs huge investment in the two priority sectors -- transport and energy.
Atlanta Group CEO Khandaker Mohiuddin, who was in the delegation, said Scomi International has now been working on monorail in Mumbai, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia.
