Directive to 12 hill owners
The divisional committee on hill management here yesterday directed owners of 12 hills of Chittagong city posing a risk of landslide to make a list of people living on the hill slopes in 15 days.
The committee would take steps to evacuate those people gradually with the help of district administration, said Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Sirajul Islam, also the committee head, after a meeting at Chittagong Circuit House.
The Hill Management Committee was formed following a devastating landslide on a hill on June 11, 2007 and identified the 12 risky hills.
Bangladesh Railway, Public Works Department and Chittagong Wasa and a few individuals and private organisations own the hills, including Batali Hill, where the protection wall collapsed on June 1.
The committee also directed Chittagong City Corporation to sue land grabbers who set up shanties on the slopes of Batali Hill.
