Border survey stopped amid agitation by local people

The new survey team could not start survey on Sylhet-Meghalaya border for the 2nd day yesterday in the face of agitation by local people who fear that their lands will be handed over to the Indians. The surveyors yesterday went to the area close to the Sub Pillar 1 of Border Pillar 1264 along Sonarhat Gowainghat-Lykhat border. UNO of Gowainghat Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury told The Daily Star that even hour long discussion they could not convince the local people. The Indian survey team led by A Sampliang was also compelled to back in the face of locals' agitation yesterday. A new team of Survey officials from the capital arrived here on June 29 and attempted to resume the job on Wednesday but failed in the face of locals' agitation. The joint survey on the adversely possessed lands (APL) on the borders remained suspended since 20 June in the face protest of border people.
