Cop action on Farroque condemned

A number of organisations and 1001 teachers of different private and public universities yesterday condemned the police assault on Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque Wednesday, the first day of BNP-led alliance's 48-hour hartal. Under the banner of Bishwabidyalay Shikkhak Somonnoy Parishad, the teachers said the government activities are nothing but an expression of fascism, which would intensify the ongoing political crisis. In a statement, they advocated for peaceful solution to the country's problems. The signatories include Dr Emajuddin Ahmed, Dr Sadrul Amin, Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, Dr Anwar Ullah Chowdhury, Dr Zahidul Islam, and Akhter Hossain Khan. Shoto Nagorik, a citizens' rights organisation, sent a separate press release condemning the attack and urging the government to refrain from such aggressive activities for the sake of democracy. Meanwhile, a number of other political and social organisations in separate statements demanded exemplary punishment to the police officers who beat up the opposition chief whip. The organisations include Gonoforum, Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote, Bangladesh Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad, Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), and Association of Engineers Bangladesh.
