Citizens' Smart Cards before '14 election on cards
Election Commission (EC) has undertaken a plan to provide the citizens with Smart Card, containing all information of a voter, in place of the existing voter ID card.
The commission, in view of this, has prepared the proposal of a project title “Identification system for enhancing access to the services idea”, which is now waiting for approval of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec).
Election Commissioner Muhamamd Sahul Hussain told BSS that the Tk 19 crore project is expected to be approved by the Ecnec this month and it would be implemented with the credit facilities from the World Bank.
The Smart Card, which would be like ATM card of a bank, is expected to reach the voters before 2014 election, Sahul said.
Sources at the EC said the Smart Card would contain name, date of birth, place of birth, present and permanent address, birth registration number, blood group, names of the parents and their ID number with other information of a voter.
The sources said some companies from Japan, China, India, South Korea and the USA have submitted proposal to make the Smart Card. But most of the proposals do not suit to the requirement of the commission.
The EC has already talked to some local experts and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to come to a decision on the matter, an official at the EC said, adding that the commission is also considering to give the task to the security printing press.
