Sultan Salauddin Tuku, president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was placed on a three-day fresh remand yesterday in connection with the July 1 petrol bomb attack targeting the vice-chancellor of Dhaka University. Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-or-Rashid granted the remand after Sub-inspector Jalilur Rahman of Shahbag Police Station produced him before the court with a 10-day prayer. Tuku was produced after completion of his two-day remand in connection with the June 26 arson attack that killed taxicab passenger Faruque in the city. Meanwhile, the court rejected another 10-day remand prayer sought by the Detective Branch of police in Faruque murder case. SI Jalilur Rahman, investigation officer of the DU bomb attack case, said Tuku is an accused in the case filed with Shahbagh Police Station on July 1, and they were trying to obtain information from him regarding other persons involved in the attack. He added they will also interrogate him to ascertain the motive behind the attack. "We will interrogate him at DB office at Minto Road instead of taking him to Shahbagh Police Station on security ground". Detectives arrested Tuku on Monday from a Gulshan house. Unidentified persons hurled a cracker targeting the DU vice-chancellor on the campus on July 1. Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, however, did not get hurt as it exploded around two feet away from him. The VC said the cracker detonated as he was awaiting some foreign guests in front of the Institute of Education and Research near Mall Chattar.
