An initiative taken for introducing the Halda River, a natural fish-spawning site of Bangladesh, to the outside world was awarded National Digital Innovation Award this year. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday conferred the award to Prof Monjurul Kibria of Chittagong University, for his unique initiative for introducing the Halda River with global people and making people aware about the necessity of conservation of the river through a website designed by him. Prof Kibria launched the website www.haldariver.org in December 2010 with a call to declare the world's only tidal river Halda for natural carp (Rui, Catla, Mrigal and Kali Baush) spawning, as a world heritage and necessary initiative for its conservation. The website became the champion out of five submissions for the award in vibrant private sector category, sources in Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) said. Halda is an 81-kilometre river in Southeastern side of Bangladesh, which originates in Ramgarh upazila of the Chittagong Hill Tracts and falls into the Karnaphuli River. The selection committee of the award said, “The website's goal is to create mass awareness through information among all facets of our country to ensure conservation of Halda and declaring it as a national natural fish spawning heritage.” The committee said Halda River, similar to the Sundarbans, is also a unique natural heritage of Bangladesh. The sole carp spawning river of the country is also the living gene bank of pure Indian major carps.
