With the theme "divide and rule", the Prime Bank-NDDC 23rd National Debate Competition 2011 began at the city's Notre Dame College yesterday. Thirty-one educational institutions (schools, colleges, and universities) including 26 in Dhaka and five outside Dhaka are taking part in the contest hosted by Notre Dame Debating Club (NDDC). The competition will continue till July 22. Mehmood Husain, additional managing director of Prime Bank Ltd, opened the debate as the chief guest. In his address, Husain urged the participants to embellish the competition with their merit, wisdom, and rational discussion. It is necessary to flourish life with rational thinking and patience for avoiding dispute, he said. Father RW Timm, former principal of Notre Dame College and founder of NDDC, said students have to build up their life with rational thinking for the welfare of society. Only debating could be a medium to establish the society based on rationality, he added. Notre Dame College Principal Father Benjamin Costa said it is needed to establish unity for the society's betterment, avoiding "divide and rule system". It was the policy of the British for exploiting the people of this sub-continent, but the participants must avoid this in the contest, he said. Rather they have to apply rationality and intelligence in debate, he added. Father Benjamin chaired the inaugural function attended also by Father Bokul S Rozario, vice-principal and NDDC coordinator; Father Adam S Perreira, NDDC moderator; and Kamal Gomez, NDDC co-moderator. The Daily Star and ABC Radio are the media partners of the competition.
