Hearing on discharge pleas ends
A Dhaka court yesterday concluded hearing on the discharge pleas of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) jawans accused in Pilkhana carnage case.
Judge Mohammad Zohurul Hoque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court fixed July 20 to hear from the accused individually whether they will plead guilty or not.
Prosecutor Mosharaf Hossain Kajol told the reporters that the hearing ended yesterday as the defence counsels completed placing their submissions.
Earlier the prosecutors read out the charges against the accused before the court, he added.
Earlier on the day defence counsels moved the discharge pleas before the makeshift court, set up at Bakshi Bazar in the city.
Defence counsels reiterated that the charge sheet of BDR carnage case is “defective” and pleaded before the court to reinvestigate the case.
Investigator gave charge sheet against 850 jawans on charge of murder, looting, arson and hiding bodies in mass graves. Of them, 21 are on the run while three died.
At least 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the February 25-26 carnage in 2009 at the BGB headquarters.
