No room for terrorists
PM tells Cyprus high commissioner
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday restated the government's strong stand against terrorism, saying an inch land of Bangladesh would not be allowed to be used for terror activities.
The prime minister made the remarks when non-resident high commissioner of Cyprus to Bangladesh Nafiska Chr Krousti paid a courtesy call on her at the Prime Minister's Office in the city.
Briefing reporters PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said as the Cyprus's envoy eulogized the prime minister's role in establishing peace, Hasina said terrorism is now an international problem.
“Terrorism has to be faced and rooted out through international cooperation,” she said.
Hasina strongly condemned the brutal bomb attacks in Indian city of Mumbai on Wednesday.
The prime minister said she herself came under many terror attacks including the August 21 grenade attacks in 2004 during the last BNP-Jamaat regime.
“In the past Bangladesh was known to the international community as a country of militancy and corruption. After taking office, we have been able to restore the image of Bangladesh as a peaceful country eradicating militancy and corruption,” Hasina said.
She said despite efforts by an evil quarter to protect corrupt and the miscreants behind the August 21 grenade attacks, they would be brought to justice.
Reiterating her stand to protect people's democratic rights, Hasina said the Awami League government never tried to influence the Election Commission.
“The Election Commission is independent and strong. The government is working to further strengthen it,” the prime minister said.
