19 cops in jail, four on remand

A Dhaka court yesterday placed four police constables out of 23, arrested on Thursday from Noakhali for using fake freedom fighters' certificates to get their jobs, on a one-day remand. Metropolitan Magistrate Mizanur Rahman sent the remaining 19 constables to jail after Investigation Officer SI Sarwar Jahan produced them before it with a five-day remand prayer. Police said they will submit remand petitions for them in phases. The four are Rafiqul (1), Shariful, Roni Mia and Firoj Kabir. The constables were arrested after an inquiry by Dhaka police super office found that they got the job in freedom fighter's quota using fake documents, said Faruk Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Gendaria Police Station. Inspector of Dhaka district Rabbani filed the case against 24 cops, including a female, withthe police on July 7. The newly recruited constables were being imparted training at Noakhali Police Training Centre where they completed five months of the six-month course. Other arrestees are Minhaz, Jihad, Afzal, Yasin, Manik, Moudud, Aminul, Sultan, Majnu, Abdul, Mizanur, Rafiqul(2), Rafiqul (3), Shahin, Ainul, Anrul, Liton, Sumon and Minhajul.
