Fair probe demanded

Over one hundred people at a human chain yesterday demanded justice through a fair probe into the death of Ganotantri Party President Nurul Islam and his son Tamohar Islam. Holding placards saying “Where is my security? Let's stop mysterious deaths” and lighting candles in front of Nurul's Lalmatia house in the city, political leaders and cultural activists also recalled his contribution to the country's politics. Local Government and Rural Development & Co-operatives (LGRD) Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said, “On behalf of the prime minister and myself, I am saying it was a planned murder. He was not killed in an electric short-circuit.” Demanding exemplary punishment of the killer, he also expressed his frustration over the delay of investigation and trial. Nurul, a nominee of Awami League-led grand alliance for Noakhali-1 constituency in the parliamentary election, died after being burnt in a mysterious fire breaking out at his residence on December 3, 2008. His son Islam was burnt alive. Nurul's daughter Moutushi Islam and wife Rubi Rahman, Bangladesh Bank former deputy governor Khandakar Ibrahim Khaled, State Minister of LGRD ministry Jahangir Kabir Nanak, lawmaker Advocate Sanjida Khanam and Nagorik Committee Convener Prof Dr Zillur Rahman Siddiqui addressed the programme.
