Repeal of wall writing act protested

Staff Correspondent
Former leaders of left leaning student organisations in a statement yesterday demanded repeal of the Wall Writing and Poster Setting (Control) Act, 2011 as it goes against the people's democratic rights. They placed the demand in a joint statement signed by 57 former leaders of the alliance. Wall writing and poster setting are parts of the country's political culture. These were used in different democratic movements in the past. But the new law will curb the people's rights to freedom of expression, they said. Signatories to the statement include Dr Mostak Hossain, Ruhin Hossain Prince, Razekuzzaman Ratan and Manabendra Dev. The cabinet approved the proposed law on July 11 in an effort to beautify the urban neighbourhoods of the country.
