An advisory committee for Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) should be formed to formulate and implement projects on development of the port city, said speakers at a citizen's rally here yesterday. CCC organised the programme at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, Chittagong chapter, marking the first anniversary of CCC Mayor Mohammad Manjur Alam and ward councillors into office. BNP-backed Manjur came to office on July 20 after beating Awami League (AL)-backed ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury in CCC polls on June 17 last year by around one lakh votes. Leaders of different political and professional organisations attended the meeting where a short documentary on CCC activities over the year was displayed. BNP city unit President Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury praised the organisers for such an event but expressed his doubt whether such a gathering reflects the opinion of the masses. He proposed keeping the CCC website updated on its regular activities and providing an option there where general people could post their comments on the activities. Khasru also suggested forming an advisory committee comprised of representatives from all walks of life to analyse people's opinions collected from the posts on the website or received in any other way. AL lawmaker Nurul Islam BSc assured of providing all-out support to the mayor from his part as well as from the government to implement the projects. He urged all to work together beyond political differences for the betterment of the port city. Communist Party of Bangladesh city unit General Secretary Shah Alam also opined for a coordinated committee headed by the mayor to reduce bureaucratic delay in taking and implementing the development projects. Mohammad Harun, president of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, Chittagong chapter, proposed forming a planning and design cell for the projects. Manjur claimed to achieve 50 percent success in eradicating waterlogging in the city. He expressed his gratitude and sought cooperation from all to continue the development activities.
