Bail to Duke stayed

The Supreme Court yesterday stayed a High Court order that granted bail to Saiful Islam Duke, nephew of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in the August 21 grenade attack case. An eight-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Mozammel Hossain stayed the HC order after granting a leave-to-appeal petition recently filed by the government against the order. The stay order will continue till disposal of the appeal, the apex court said. The SC passed the order after scrutinising the charge sheet and hearing arguments from the attorney general and the counsel for Duke. Criminal Investigation Department pressed a supplementary charge sheet in this case against 30 people including Duke before the trial court on July 3. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told the court that Duke was involved in planning the grenade attack on the Awami League rally on August 21, 2004, to kill the then opposition leader and present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
