Govt should resign for 'failure'

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia last night said the Awami League-led government has no right to continue in power as it showed "absolute failure" to run the country. “Ultimately there is no government in the country. Had there been any government, there would not be killings one after another at the borders,” she said while wife and son of slain party leader Nurul Islam of Laxmipur met her at Gulshan office in the city. President Zillur Rahman on July 14 awarded clemency to AHM Biplob, son of local Awami League leader and municipal mayor Abu Taher. Laxmipur BNP organising secretary Nurul Islam was kidnapped and murdered on September 18, 2000. Later, the court sentenced Biplob and four others to death, and nine others to life imprisonment in the murder case. BNP has protested the mercy granted by the president and demanded withdrawal of it for the sake of rule of law. The BNP chairperson said killing of six students at Aminbazar in Savar was also an unfortunate incident and it once again proved that the government has failed to ensure security of lives and properties. “The present government should resign right now accepting their failure to run the country,” she added. Rasheda Islam, wife of slain Nurul Islam, said if the president can grant mercy to such notorious criminal like Biplob, he would able to grant clemency to the killers of his wife [Ivy Rahman] too. Ivy Rahman, wife of President Zillur Rahman, was killed following a grenade attack on Awami League rally on August 21, 2004 at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city. Rashida also demanded punishment to the killers of her husband as per the court verdict. Later, a delegation of Dhaka Journalists' Union met Khaleda, also leader of the opposition in parliament, at her office.
