13 killed in road crashes

Thirteen people were killed and 27 others injured in road accidents in the city and in Munshiganj, Natore, Satkhira, and Dinajpur yesterday. Our staff correspondent reports: A bus-pickup collision on Dhaka-Demra highway in Konapara left a minor boy and the pickup driver dead yesterday. They are Rakibul Islam, 6, son of Rafiqul Islam of the city's Golapbagh in Jatrabari, and the driver, Abdul Khalek, 45. Rakibul, who was aboard the pickup with his parents, was declared dead in Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The injured parents took primary treatment in the hospital. Our Munshiganj correspondent reports: Five passengers and the driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw died as a truck crashed into the vehicle on Dhaka-Mawa highway in Sirajdikhan upazila yesterday. The deceased are Ahladi Begum, 40, Meem, 20, Renu Begum, 55, Mainul, a six-month-old baby, and the auto-rickshaw driver Shahabuddin, 35. The other victim remained unidentified. The bus also injured 20 people as it ploughed through pedestrians while fleeing the scene. Our Natore correspondent says: Four people were killed and five others wounded as a truck rammed a mini-truck at Khejurtola in Singra upazila yesterday. Roisuddin, 60, and Sakil Hossain, 45, passengers of the mini-truck, died on the spot while Golam Hossain, 6, and its driver Uzzal died in Natore sadar hospital. The injured were taken to different local hospitals and the sadar hospital. Our Satkhira correspondent adds: An unidentified woman aged about 70 died on the spot after being knocked down by a truck on Satkhira-Kaliganj road in Alipur village of the sadar upazila yesterday. Our Dinajpur correspondent says: A youth yesterday succumbed to his injuries inflicted as a truck hit his motorcycle from behind near Kasinathpur village under the sadar upazila Tuesday night. The victim is Razu Mia, 20, son of Khademul Islam of Sheikhpura village under the upazila. Razu died in Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.
