Month of great significance is upon us
Let's live up to its spirit
The holy month of Ramadan is here with its spirituality and messages for the mundane world. Abnegation from food and drink not only purifies the body but also helps us empathise with the poor and hungry. Apart from abstaining from food during the day and offering tarabih prayers at night, Muslims extend their charitable hands towards the needy.
Above all, it is a month exalted by the revelation of the Holy Quran. In fact, profound commitment to nobler pursuits is demanded of the Muslims as they go through the rigours of self-discipline and avoidance of crass materialism for a full month.
The month of spiritual enlightenment and bountiful blessings comes at a time when Bangladesh and the world are going through a turbulent time.
The message of unity that is of the essence of the holy month of Ramadan should integrate the Muslims throughout the world beyond and above their sectarian differences.
So far Bangladesh is concerned, politically we are going through uncertainties. Political leaders need not only scale down their confrontational posturing, but also bring in amity, peace and tolerance to bear on their relationships. They should keep the national interest and well-being of the people above partisan interest.
We expect our businessmen to do everything to keep the prices of essentials within the reach of the poor and middle classes and not take advantage of high demand in the market.
We also urge the affluent sections to refrain from extravagance by throwing iftar parties as if the month is a season of feast and wasteful luxury. This goes against the very spirit of Ramadan when fellow-feeling and piety should be the practice.
Imbued with the spirit of the month, we should all be sticklers for work ethics, never for once excusing ourselves from duties which take on a much nobler meaning during the holy month of Ramadan.
