Unrest at Agriculture University

Rein in such rowdy behaviour
We express our concern over the violent incident on the Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) campus in Mymensingh on Sunday. Some students belonging to Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) became unruly and rowdy, their recalcitrant behaviour glaringly demonstrated itself when they attacked the proctor's house and manhandled some of their teachers. In its very origin the incident was serious enough. For it was so un-student like for them to fall on some visitors at the university's botanical garden and allegedly snatch their mobiles away. The victims reporting to security personnel, the proctor and the police came into the picture with them being handed over to the police. What comes through is the desperado-like behaviour of wayward Chattra League elements. Not only did they assault the teachers, they also vandalized the administration building and a university bus. Mere exhortations, even those from the Prime Minister herself have not succeeded in curbing the students' excesses within or outside the campus. Despite severe castigation and warnings by all quarters, the misguided elements of the student wing have been throwing their weight around claiming proximity to power. They are completely oblivious of the rich heritage of the Chattra League, which only the other day observed its founding day amidst commitment to high ideals. Somehow the top leaders are keeping themselves adrift from the front's activities with a sense of resignation. But incidents such as the one that happened at BAU can only be averted if the local Awami League leaders and MPs keep tab on the goings-on and apply a timely brake to rein-in the goons. Once again, it is for the umpteenth time we call upon the ruling party top brass and their local colleagues to make a serious bid to contain the elements within the BCL who keep embarrassing the government and eroding its credibility. Weed out the mal-content from the BCL units through infusion of new elected leadership at all levels. Meanwhile, the culprits must be made to face the law.
