Durban Climate Summit
Play responsible role
Hasan Mahmud urges developed countries
State Minister for Environment and Forest Dr Hasan Mahmud urged developed countries to play a responsible role in the upcoming Durban Climate Summit.
He made the call while addressing a seminar titled “Climate Change Vulnerability in Bangladesh: National Response and Global Responsibility” at Carnal University, USA on Tuesday, said a PID handout.
Dr Mahmud said the Kyoto Protocol is still the only legal binding for the global leaders. “So, they (global leaders) should take steps in the second phase by maintaining the Kyoto Protocol to check global warming and thus protect the environment.”
Recalling the vulnerability of Bangladesh, he said climate change is not only a risk for Bangladesh, but also a reality and “we're trying our best to cope with the adverse impacts of climate change.”
He said Bangladesh's government already allocated US $ 300 million in the last three fiscal years for climate change programmes.
Dr Hasan also pointed out that the world leaders did not form the US$ 30 billion and US$ 100 billion trust funds as per their commitment in Copenhagen and Cancun Climate summits respectively.
