New curriculum in 2013: Nahid

The government took initiatives to modernise the curriculum in textbooks for classes VI to XII, said Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid. "It would not be possible to build a digital Bangladesh with the existing education. We are going to reorganise the curriculum in light with the national education policy," he said, adding that the students will get the books containing the new curriculum in 2013. The minister was speaking at a national seminar titled “Development of curriculum on the basis of National Education Policy 2010” at Biam auditorium in the city on Thursday. National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) and Secondary Education Sector Development Project (SESDP) organised the seminar. Nahid said a massive change took place in national and international contexts over the demand of time but the curriculum, prepared 18 years ago and changed in 1996, is still running. "Bringing changes in the curriculum is a must. We want to build citizens educated with modern and ethical education, patriotism and honesty and liable to people," he said. Nahid stressed on technical and vocational education, saying that the government is going to introduce technical subjects in the curriculum of class VI. The organisers at the seminar said curriculum of some 75 books of secondary level and four books in higher secondary level will be changed. Human qualities, ethical and democratic values, discipline, patriotism, creativity, critical thinking, practice of maths, history, culture and sports will be given priority in the new curriculum, they said. Some recommendations were proposed in the seminar which include -- extending class hours to 50 minutes from the existing 35 to 40 minutes and reduction of annual leave to 116 days from 141 days.
