Death of MU Ahmed
Pro-BNP lawyers doing politics of falsehood
Says state minister for law
State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advocate Quamrul Islam yesterday said BNP-backed lawyers are doing politics of falsehood over the death of Supreme Court lawyer MU Ahmed.
"MU Ahmed could not go to the court, as he had long been suffering from diseases," he said.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled "Arrest and trial of the chargesheeted accused in August 21 grenade attacks", marking the seventh death anniversary of Ivy Rahman.
Bangladesh Awami Muktijoddha Projanmo League organised the discussion at Dhaka Reporters' Unity in the morning.
The state minister said, "MU Ahmed was rushed to the hospital immediately after his arrest, as he complained of chest pain.
"He got bail on August 16 and later his wife took him under her custody and the court was informed of the matter the next day. His family members took him to Square Hospital for treatment where he died."
Expressing his deep shock at the death of MU Ahmed, one of his fellow colleagues, he said, "Some so-called lawyers and intellectuals are doing politics of falsehood over his death." He urged all to stop this for the welfare of the nation.
However, Attorney General Advocate Mahbubey Alam said, "Police did not torture MU Ahmed and such allegation was made to do politics with the body."
The chief lawyer of the country said this at a press briefing at his Eskaton Road residence in the city.
"I came to know after talking with the police that MU Ahmed survived after he suffered a heart attack as police rushed him to the hospital," he said.
He also raised a question, "Why did the pro-BNP lawyers not demand an investigation to the court if MU Ahmed was surely tortured by police as many days have passed after his arrest.
"Now, what they said over the death of the lawyer is politically motivated."
