Death of SC Lawyer
NHRC boss for judicial probe
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman yesterday demanded judicial probe into allegation that MU Ahmed, a pro-BNP lawyer at the Supreme Court, died due to police torture.
Ahmed died in a city hospital on Friday, sixteen days after he suffered a heart attack in police custody. BNP leaders, pro-BNP lawyers and Ahmed's family members are claiming that he died because of the torture.
Prof Mizanur made the demand while talking to The Daily Star after attending Ahmed's namaz-e-janaza on the Supreme Court premises.
Prof Mizanur said claim of Ahmed's wife that her husband died due to torture by law enforcers is a serious allegation and any unnatural death is a matter of concern for the state.
“I think that the Ministry of Home Affairs should form a committee to hold a judicial probe in order to uncover the whole truth.
“If the allegation is found true, the government should take action against the law enforcers responsible for his death,” he said.
He said the Supreme Court itself might issue a suo moto order on the government to form a judicial inquiry committee to find out whether MU Ahmed's death was natural or unnatural.
“We have seen in the past that the Supreme Court issued a number of such suo moto orders to establish the rule of law and the rights of people,” he said.
