The World Bank (WB) yesterday approved a $300 million credit for the Third Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP III) to support primary education in Bangladesh. The project aims at ensuring merit-based teacher recruitment and improving teacher education; delivering textbooks to at least 90 percent of primary schools within first month of commencement of the school year, said a WB press release. The project aims to increase the net enrollment in primary education to 98 percent and to take the completion rate from the current 60 percent to 65 percent by 2015, the release added. Along with WB, eight other development partners have shown their commitment to support the government's PEDP III project. The cost of the first four years of the programme is an estimated $5.89 billion, of which the development partners will contribute $909.4 million.
