Four members of a family suffered burn injuries as a fire erupted in a gas-filled bedroom of their house in the city's Sabujhbagh early hours yesterday. Three of the injured were admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The victims are handicraft traders Fayej Ahmed, 47, his wife Yasmin Akhter, 35, their son Hasibur Rahman, 10, and Yasmin's sister Tania Akhter, 15. Doctors stated the condition of Fayej and Yasmin to be critical. About 70 percent of Fayej's body, 60 percent of Yasmin's, and 30 percent of Habib's were burnt in the blaze. Tania said the fire erupted and spread all over the room with a bang as Fayez struck a match around 1:30am to light a cigarette. "We saw the flame rose up to the roof and started burning our skin within a second", she said, adding that Yasmin and Habibur were asleep during the accident. Neighbours put out the blaze and rushed the victims to the hospital, she added. Tania said the gas might have collected in the room from a leakage in the pipe.
