Unsafe Roads, Highways
Call to join sit-in on Eid day
Eminent writer and columnist Syed Abul Maksud urged people from all walks of life to attend a sit-in at Central Shaheed Minar in the city on Eid day protesting the government's failure to maintain a safe communications system in the country.
“We demand natural death. We will continue our movement until road safety is being ensured,” he said while talking at a programme on ABC Radio yesterday.
The country's highways and roads have turned into death traps taking numerous lives every year, he said.
Road communications must be standard and safe and, failure to ensure which, the government will be held responsible, he added.
Maksud, however, assured the government that they are working as a pressure group on behalf of the government to get maximum output from their activities. “We are not your opponent, don't treat as your enemy,” he said.
He also vowed to take forward a movement until corruption in the communications sector ends.
Earlier on August 24, citizens from different strata, at a rally in the city, demanded removal of Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain and Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan.
The rally was held to mark the deaths of filmmaker Tareque Masud, media personality Ashfaque Munier Mishuk and three others in a road crash in Manikganj on August 13.
