The transcending Eid spirit

A great occasion of shared happiness
After month-long fasting, the holy Eid-ul-Fitr is here. Muslims all over the world will celebrate the day with deep spiritual contentment having practiced self-restraint, abstained from food, drinks and all forms self-indulgence during the daytime. This is also an occasion to further the fellow-feelings and brotherhood in the world. Only feasting and merrymaking does not make the Eid. The day is also for serious soul-searching on part of all Muslims. In the first place, the empathy we developed with the poor and the famished during the period of self abnegation need not be seasonal, it should be carried forward. Furthermore, the Muslims all over the world should go through self-examination as to whether they are living by the true spirit of Islam which revolves around peace or not. The Iftar spirit could not quite lead up to the public expectation of bon homie among the political leaders. What is worrying is a hint of confrontational politics as given by the opposition. Hopefully, both the political parties will behave responsibly. The politicians should feel the pulse of people and deliver to their expectations. Live and let live ought to be the principle of their politics. Unfortunately, Islamic and Arab world is fraught with inconclusive upheavals and fratricidal war like situation. But Islam never permits senseless killings and suicide attacks by a Muslim on another Muslim or people belonging to other faiths. Islam teaches us to be sensible, tolerant and understanding. On this auspicious occasion, we fervently hope that the people will take lessons from the teachings of Ramzan and apply those in every sphere of life, and make living worthwhile. We also wish people traveling to and from home enjoyable and safe journeys. Happy Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid Mubarak to all.
