A newly-formed civic body will demonstrate at Central Shaheed Minar in the city on Eid day demanding Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain's removal and an end to corruption in the communications sector. At a press conference in Liberation War Museum, the organisers of the body Chhatra-Shikkhak-Peshajibi-Janata (students, teachers, professionals and people) urged all to attend their programme from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. Earlier on August 24, they threatened to hold a sit-in programme if the communications minister is not removed before Eid for his failure in maintaining the dilapidated road network, causing thousands of deaths and injuries every year. The protest rally comes following deaths of five people, including noted filmmaker Tareque Masud and ATN News CEO Ashfaque Munier Mishuk in a tragic road accident on Dhaka-Aricha highway on August 13. "There is no political purpose behind this programme. We request the people to join us and ensure natural deaths,” said columnist Syed Abul Maksud, reading out a statement. Mismanagement and corruption in the transport sector, faulty roads and highways, unfit vehicles and lack of accountability of the authority concerned lead to unnatural deaths on the roads, he said. Family members of Mishuk Munier expressed solidarity with the programme. Manjuli Kazi, wife of Mishuk Munier, said there is no political party that serves people in Bangladesh rather they work for their own gains.
