Int'l Day of Disappeared today
Today is the International Day of the Disappeared.
On the occasion, Odhikar in a statement yesterday demanded of the government to investigate into each reported case of disappearance.
Odhikar, a rights organisation, said there are 15 reported cases of disappearance after being arrested by the security forces which was 17 last year.
'But it cannot be allowed to go unchecked,' it said, adding that the security forces must operate within the constitution and the laws. The organisations and individuals responsible also should be identified, investigated and prosecuted.
Odhikar also demanded that the families of those missing should be informed regularly about the process to locate and recover the disappeared persons and should be adequately compensated for their pain and suffering.
It reiterated the call for an immediate accession to the International Convention of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance and immediately put in place measures that no person is made to disappear against his/her will.
The Convention was adopted in 2006 by the United Nations General Assembly and came into force on December 23, 2010. This is regarded as one of the major achievements for the protection of the human rights of people around the world.
'Enforced disappearance' is particularly a heinous violation of human rights and an international crime.
The International Day of the Disappeared on August 30 is an annual commemoration day created to draw attention to the fate of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives and/or legal representatives, according to the Wikipedia.
