BCL extortionist beaten by mob

Our Correspondent, Satkhira
The president of Satkhira district unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was beaten up by a mob as he and his men tried to forcibly take 10-12 shirts away from several shops in a shopping complex of Satkhira town the day before the Eid day. Sheikh Jewel Hasan, the BCL leader, demanded the shirts as extortion. Md Asadul Haque, owner of M/s Meherun Plaza, and the shop owners said some 10-12 BCL leaders and activists led by Jewel entered the market Tuesday noon, took 10-12 shirts from at least six shops, and tried to leave without paying the price. Asked for the price, the BCL men issued threats to the shop owners, leading the traders, the shop staffs, and shoppers to swoop on them. Jewel, however, fled the scene. Satkhira Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shah Jahan Khan said he heard the incident, but none filed any case. Sheikh Jewel Hasan could not be contacted despite repeated attempts over cell phone.
