A joint team of Rajshahi Development Authority (RDA) and the district administration, in an eviction drive yesterday, demolished nine buildings on a piece of land acquired by the government near Rajshahi New Market. The structures include a three-storied building and eight one-storied concrete shops on 7.5 decimal of land, formerly owned by Abdul Mazed, a local businessman, and his associates, said RDA Assistant Engineer Md Anisur Rahman. The land was acquired six months ago for construction of a road from Gourhanga to Shaheb Bazar by RDA. RDA served several notices to Mazed and the deputy commissioner's office served another on Thursday last. But Mazed failed to comply, said Anisur. Mazed had filed a case with a Rajshahi court challenging the price provided by the government for the land, he said. Mazed was not available on the scene and could not be contacted for comment. Businessmen who rented the shops said they were not given enough time to take away their belongings. RDA Chairman Abdur Rahim and Executive Engineer Abul Kalam Azad, Assistant Police Commissioner M Rokonuzzaman and Officer-in-Charge Shahadat Hossain of Boalia Police Station were present on the scene.
