NU hangs list of 807 sacked staffs
Demonstration for reinstatement continues
The National University (NU) authority yesterday hanged a list of 807 sacked officials and employees on the notice board of its Board Bazar campus in Gazipur.
On Saturday, the NU syndicate at an urgent meeting decided to sack 821 officials and employees who were recruited through a fake advertisement during the tenure of the BNP-led alliance government.
An official of NU in return for anonymity told The Daily Star the number of dismissed officials in the list may be less as some of them either had died or left the job.
Meanwhile, the sacked staffs yesterday staged a daylong demonstration under the banner of Job Preservation Committee at the university in Board Bazar.
The authority's declaration of sacking a large number of employees is inhuman and illegal as it did not give them any scope for appeal before taking such decision, they observed.
During a rally in front of the university canteen, the demonstrators said they will appeal to the Supreme Court against the August 23 verdict. They also demanded the university authority should not stop disbursing salaries to the sacked staffs until disposal of the appeal.
Earlier on August 23 this year, the High Court announced the recruitment of around 1,222 teachers, officials and employees, who were recruited during the tenure of former NU vice chancellor Prof Aftab Ahmed, illegal.
NU has a total of 1,735 staffs including the 1,222.
The NU authorities said they faced problems in continuing their regular activities as many other officials joined the demonstrators leaving their workplaces. These officials were also appointed during the tenure of the BNP-Jamaat government, a source at NU said.
The day-to-day activities of the university might get hampered due to the removal of such a large number of officials and employees, some NU officials alleged.
Nurul Amin, convenor of Job Preservation Committee, said they would continue their demonstration today.
“We may arrange a press conference on Wednesday to let the countrymen know about our situation,” he added.
Currently, around 12 lakh students are studying in around 2,400 colleges under the NU.
