Sacked NU staffs stage sit-in
The sacked staffs of National University (NU) continued their sit-in demonstration for the second consecutive day on the university campus in Board Bazar in Gazipur yesterday.
Under the banner of Job Preservation Committee, they staged a daylong demonstration and said they have appealed against the High Court (HC) verdict and the university authority should not stop disbursing their salaries until disposal of the appeal.
Earlier on August 23 this year, the HC announced the appointment of teachers, officials and employees, who were recruited from November 2003 to August 2004 during the tenure of the BNP-led alliance government, illegal. The former NU vice chancellor Prof Aftab Ahmed appointed around 1,222 teachers, officials and employees during that time.
As per the HC directive, the NU syndicate on Saturday decided to sack 821 staffs and hanged a list of 807 sacked staffs on the university notice board the next day.
Nurul Amin, convenor of Job Preservation Committee, said the sacked staffs, divided into three groups, are going to appeal against the August 23 HC verdict and two groups have already appealed.
"Hearing of the appeals will be held tomorrow [today]," he told The Daily Star.
Besides, they would continue their demonstration and may also arrange a press conference on Wednesday depending on today's decision on the appeal, he added.
Law enforcing personnel have been deployed on the campus since Saturday night.
The university has a total of 1,735 staffs including the 1,222.
