The main opposition BNP and Workers Party submitted their annual audit report to the Election Commission yesterday, two days before the deadline for the submission expires. Led by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general, a delegation of BNP submitted the party's annual audit report of 2010 to the official of EC secretariat. Talking to reporters after submitting the report, Rizvi refused to reveal any information about the income and expenditure of the party. “We also want people know about political parties' income and expenditure. But we will be able to let people know about it after verification of the Election Commission”, Rizvi said. Anisur Rahman, general secretary of Workers Party, led the party's delegation while submitting the annual audit report of 2010. Awami League and 20 other registered political parties submitted their annual audit report to the EC on July 31, the day the deadline for the submission expires. BNP at that time sought two months' time from the EC while nine other parties requested for 1-3 months' time to submit their audit reports. According to Political Parties Registration Rules, 2008, a party has to get its financial transactions of a calendar year audited by a chartered accountant firm and submit a copy of the firm's report to the commission by July 31 of the following year. Prior to the ninth parliamentary elections, registration of political parties with the EC was made mandatory, and the rule for submission of audit reports was framed to ensure transparency in political parties' financial transactions.
