No legal bar to continue trial of Pintu

Staff Correspondent
There is no legal bar to continue trial of former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and other accused in the Pilkhana carnage case as a High Court bench rejected his petition yesterday. Pintu filed a petition with the HC challenging the framing of charges against him in the case. The vacation bench of Justice AKM Fazlur Rahman and Justice Farid Ahmed rejected the petition considering that it was not submitted before it, Additional Attorney General Momtazuddin Fakir told The Daily Star. He said there is no legal bar to proceed with the trial in the case following the HC order. The bench told the counsels for Pintu that it would summarily reject the petition and they (Pintu's counsels) can take the petition back from the bench. Then Pintu's lawyers requested the judges to reject it considering that it was not placed, so that they can move the petition before another bench later on. A special court in Dhaka on August 10 framed charges against all 847 accused, including Pintu, of the much-talked about 2009 BDR carnage case. Pintu on August 21 filed a revision petition with the HC challenging framing of charges against him. Barrister Rafique-ul Huq and Advocate SM Shahjahan appeared for the petitioner.
