Supporters of contesting candidates of the CBA election in the Chittagong City Corporation yesterday scuffled over the postponement of the election. The election, the first in 18 years, was scheduled for today. A Chittagong court on Tuesday postponed the election upon a petition by Atiqur Rahman, vice president of CCC Jatiyatabadi Sramik Karmachari Union. The petition cited anomalies in the voter list. Protesting the court order, supporters of three unions gathered on the CCC premises since morning, hampering the official activities for four hours. Around 9:30am, activists of two rival unions were locked in a scuffle. They, however, returned to work following a meeting between leaders of unions and CCC officials. Asked about the petition, Abu Tayab, president of CCC Jatiyatabadi Sramik Karmachari Union, said they expelled Atiqur three months ago but had to take him back due to pressure from the union. According to him, Atiqur did not get himself registered as voter although the CCC gave ample time. Manjur-e Elahi, chief executive officer of the CCC, admitted some errors in the voter list and said they will form a body to correct it. City Mayor M Majur Alam said they were very keen to hold the election but could not do so following the court order. He, however, hoped the election will take place soon.
