Two women beaten to death
One for dowry, the other over land dispute
Two women were beaten to death, one in Satkhira allegedly by husband for dowry on Friday night while the other in Lalmonirhat by a neighbour over piece of disputed land on Wednesday.
A housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband at village Pratapnagar in Assassuni upazila of Satkhira for dowry on Friday night, reports our correspondent.
Victim Mazida Khatun, 42, was wife of Md Shahab Uddin of the village.
Quoting local people police said, Mazida, daughter of Surman Gazi of village Hijlia, in the same upazila was married to Shahab Uddin, son of Jamal Uddin of Pratapnagar village about 20 years back.
During the marriage, Shahab Uddin took dowry in cash and kinds amounting to Tk. 25,000.
Recently, he demanded more dowry from the victim's parents.
As she failed to bring money from parents, Shahab started to torture Mazida off and on.
On Friday night, the cruel husband beat Mazida mercilessly leaving her dead on the spot, victim's brother Abul Kalam alleged.
He further alleged that the killers poured liquid insecticides in Mazida's mouth to turn it into a suicide case.
Police recoverd the body with several marks of injuries on her person and sent it to Satkhira morgue for postmortem.
Abul Kalam later filed a case with Assassuni PS accusing Shahab Uddin and four others.
In Lalmonirhat, an elderly woman was beaten to death by her neighbour following an altercation over a piece of disputed land in Aditmari upazila on Wednesday evening.
Two of the family members of victim Ayesha Begum, 70, of Kutirpar village in Mohishkhocha union were also injured during the assault, reports our correspondent.
Police arrested Ayub Ali, 60, the key accused in the case.
Injured Karom Ali, 80, husband of Ayesha and their son Anwarul Islam, 40, were admitted to Aditmari upazila health complex.
Koram had a longstanding dispute with his neighbour Ayub over fixing boundaries of a piece of disputed land, said Mahfuzur Rahman, officer in-charge of Aditmari police station.
As a sequel to that, Ayub along with his family members and relatives swooped on Karom and Anwarul when they were going to a village market around 7:20pm.
Hearing the news, Ayesha rushed to the spot and protested the attack.
At one stage, Ayub and his relatives hit Ayesha with a weapon, leaving her dead on the spot.
