60 houses damaged during Magura AL-BNP clash

At least 60 houses were vandalised during a clash between the supporters of Awami League and BNP at village Ichhapur in Sreepur upazila yesterday afternoon. The village is about 18 kilometres away from the district headquarters. On information, police from Sreepur police station reached the spot and fired at least seven blank shots to bring the situation under control. Sources said there was a longstanding rivalry over establishing supremacy in the village between Gayeshpur union unit BNP president Nurul Islam Biswas and former organising secretary of Sreepur upazila unit AL Rostam Ali. Police quoting locals said, supporters of Nurul and Rostam locked in a clash at around 11:30am following a minor accident between two shallow-engine driven tempos -- one owned by Khanjar Ali, a supporter of Rostam and the other by Hasmat, a supporter of Nurul. During the clash, rivals damaged the house of Rezaul Islam, a supporter of Rostam triggering a violent clash at noon leaving at least 3 people injured. The injured were treated at Sreepur upazila health complex. Both the groups used lethal weapons during the clash. Agitating supporters of Rostam Ali later went on the rampage in the village at around 3:00pm which continued till about 5:30pm, witnesses said. Locals said, armed supporters of Rostam swooped on the houses of their rivals vandalising at least 60 houses. On information, police reached to the spot and fired at least seven blank shots to disperse the unruly villagers. No case was lodged till filing of this report at 6:00pm yesterday. Contacted over cell phone, Kazi Abdus Salek, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreepur police station said he deployed several policemen in village to keep the situation under control. The OC also assured of taking proper action against the unruly villagers for attacking the houses.
