DU Admission Test under Ga Unit
Re-evaluate answer sheets
Zafar Iqbal opines before High Court
Eminent educationist Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal yesterday suggested re-evaluation of answer sheets under Ga unit of Dhaka University instead of taking re-admission test.
He also suggested dropping those questions in which there are no correct answers.
Zafar Iqbal opined before a High Court bench during hearing a writ petition that has challenged the DU authorities' decision to cancel results of the admission test and hold a fresh test on December 9.
On November 24, the HC has sought advice from Zafar Iqbal to resolve the problem.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain yesterday fixed tomorrow (Nov 30) for further hearing on the issue.
The court asked Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Prof Zafar Iqbal, DU lawyers and the DU authorities to take a decision to solve the problem and inform it tomorrow.
It asked Prof Anwar Hossain, president of Dhaka University Teachers' Association, to appear before it tomorrow to place his opinion on the issue.
During proceedings yesterday, Zafar Iqbal, also a professor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust), recommended adding 10 more seats in every department of the business faculty (Ga unit) for this year only, if possible.
Usually, one can sit for any admission tests in the university twice after passing HSC exams or equivalent exams.
Zafar Iqbal, however, suggested allowing those admission seekers who sat for the second time admission tests in the university's Ga unit to third time admission test in the next session.
He said re-examination is needed when answer sheets are burnt or lost. But, in this case everything is available. So, it is possible to solve the problem by re-evaluating the answer sheets, he added.
Besides, it may not be possible for all admission seekers to take part in the re-examination for different reasons, he said.
Replying to a question from the court, Zafar Iqbal said he felt that it was not a mistake rather negligence and the admission committee is responsible for it.
Twelve candidates, who qualified for admission, filed the petition on November 22 seeking HC directives upon the DU authorities to continue the admission process based on the first results published on October 31.
However, the DU administration re-assessed the answer sheets and published fresh results on November 2 on account of a number of “incorrect answers” being shown as correct.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the government, while Manzill Murshid appeared for writ petitioners, and AFM Mesbahuddin stood for the DU authorities.
