Authentic data a must for development

Speakers tell workshop

Timely, accurate, and reliable information and data are inevitable in the formulation of any development policy, speakers said at a workshop here yesterday. Without accurate information and data, proper planning is not possible; without proper planning, development is not possible, they said. The speakers observed that lack of accurate information and data is the main obstacle to the country's development. So everybody should preserve accurate information in the respective field, they said. The workshop on "National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS)" was organised by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) at Chittagong Circuit House yesterday. Dilder Hossain, a project director of the BBS, gave an overview on NSDS, saying that it is a strategy to develop the National Statistical System (NSS) and it will enrich the information depository of Bangladesh. Riti Ibrahim, secretary of Statistics Division, Ministry of Planning, said NSDS will bring benefit not only to the BBS, but to everybody. The government high official placed importance on inclusion of the subject of statistics in the syllabi of all classes from class V onwards to make the students rationalistic and realistic from early life. BBS Director General Shahjahan Ali Mollah said that through workshops on NSDS, a universal document will be created to provide timely, accurate, and reliable data to everybody. Chittagong city Mayor M Manjur Alam also spoke at the workshop among Additional Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Nurul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and Development) Khaled Mahmud Chowdhury, and others.
