Suhrawardy's anniversary of death observed

The 48th death anniversary of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, one of the greatest leaders of undivided India, was observed yesterday with due respect across the country. Different organisations chalked out programmes to pay homage to the great leader. President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate messages on Sunday, paid tributes to Suhrawardy, who pioneered secular politics in the region. During his political career, he held various important offices in the posts of deputy mayor in Calcutta Corporation in 1924. He was labour and commerce minister in AK Fazlul Huq's coalition government, civil supplies minister in Khwaja Nazimuddin's cabinet during 1943-1945, prime minister of undivided Bengal during 1946-1947, law minister in Mohammad Ali's cabinet in Pakistan during 1954-1955 and, finally, prime minister of Pakistan for a period of 13 months during 1956-1957, says Banglapedia. Suhrawardy was born in Medinipore on September 8, 1892 in one of the most distinguished Muslim families of the then Bengal. He had a long political career, spanning a period of 43 years. Shaheed Suhrawardy Jatiya Smriti Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Baktitto Gabeshona Kendra, Bishwa Bangalee Sammelon, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote and Jatiya Ganotantrik League placed wreaths at Suhrawardy's grave and held meetings to mark the day.
