Charge sheet against Ilyas, 27 others placed

Police yesterday submitted the charge sheet against former BNP lawmaker M Ilyas Ali and 27 others in a case filed for torching and damaging vehicles on December 18 that burnt to death an unidentified man and wounded scores of people. Investigation officer of the case sub-inspector Noor Mohammad in the charge sheet mentioned that former lawmaker Ilyas Ali, also the district unit BNP president, instructed his men for damaging the vehicles. Other accused made in the charge sheet include district Sechchhasebak Dal President Shamsuzzaman Zaman, South Surma upazila BNP chief ATM Foyez and joint secretary of city unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) Iftekhar Ahmed Dinar. The accused named in the charge sheet created an anarchic situation in the city. Fire service men brought the situation under control on the day, police mentioned. Judicial magistrate Enayet Kabir Sarker fixed January 1 for hearing on the charge sheet, court sources said. Two vehicles were burnt and some others damaged when BNP men staged demonstrations in Sylhet city as elsewhere in the country on December 18. Police later filed the case.
