12 brick kilns fined
Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined 12 brick kilns Tk 20.8 lakh in Narayanganj, Laksmipur and Chittagong on different grounds.
In Narayanganj, DoE arrested owners of four illegal brick kilns and fined them Tk 12 lakh for polluting the environment, reports our correspondent.
The arrestees were released after the fine was paid.
The brick kilns had no clearance certificate from the department, said DoE Director Mohammad Munir Chowdhury.
The brick kilns are M/s Matuail Bricks-1, 2, 3 and M/s Bhuiyan Bricks.
The owners have been directed to limit the area of the brickfields to two acres from their ten acres within the next three months and replace the traditional chimneys with modern ones, said the DoE director.

The teams also seized 7,630 mounds of firewood and directed the owners to stop all activities of the kilns.
In Laksmipur, the team fined M/s Firoz Bricks Manufacturer Tk 30,000, M/s A K P Bricks Tk 1 lakh, M/s Chowdhury Bricks Tk 1 lakh and Iqbal Bricks Tk 2 lakh.
In Banshkhali Chittagong, M/s Mohammad Miah Bricks was fined Tk 1 lakh, Khwaja and Chowdhury Bricks Tk 1 lakh, M/s Ismail Enterprise Tk 1 lakh and M/s N T B Bricks was fined Tk 1 lakh.
DoE also closed M/s Ahmmad Ullah Bricks, in Begumganj of Noakhali for disobeying their directions.
